Cosmetic Surgery for the Face
  • Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)
About the procedure: Rhinoplasty can reshape the nose by reducing or increasing size, modifying the shape of the tip or bridge of the nose, or by narrowing the span of the nostrils. The angle between the nose and upper lip can be changed, and nose surgery can be helpful in relieving some breathing problems. On average, rhinoplasty lasts 1-2 hours and depending on the procedure, local or general anesthesia will be required. Generally this procedure is performed on an outpatient basis at a local sugery center. More complex surgeries will be performed at an area hospital.

    Following the procedure:
Following the surgery, patients can experience swelling and bruising around the eyes and nose. Headaches may be experienced as a result of the procedure and some bleeding and stiffness can be expected. Patients can return to work within 1-2 weeks and can take on regular, more strenuous activity following a 2-3 week duration. [ menu ]

  • Brow Lift (Forehead Lift)
    About the procedure:
Most often performed on patients over age 40, a brow or forehead lift helps to minimize creases on the forehead area, to lift drooping eyebrows, to reduce hooding over the eyes. This procedure entails the removal of excess tissue and altering of muscles and tightening forehead skin. Incisions are generally made behind the hairline, and the procedure entails 1-2 hours of surgery generally in an outpatient setting where local or general anesthesia is utilized.

    Following the procedure:
Patients can experience a temporary painful, tight scalp and may notice an unnatural look in the early stages following the procedure. Patients can usually return to work within 2-5 days and return to regular, more strenuous activity within 10 days to 3 weeks. [ menu ]

  • Face Lift
About the procedure: Most often performed on patients over age 40, the facelift procedure helps to improve sagging facial skin, jowls and loose neck skin by removing excess fat, tightening muscles and redraping the skin. The procedure takes several hours and utilizes local or general anesthesia in an outpatient or inpatient setting. A short inpatient stay may be recommended.

    Following the procedure:
Patients can experience temporary bruising, swelling, numbness and tenderness in the skin on the face area. A tight feeling or dry skin may also be experienced. There are risks associated with the procedure, such as loss of feeling or control of facial muscles that may be temporary or permanent that should be discussed with your plastic surgeon. A 10-14 day recovery period can be expected and exposure to the sun should be limited for several months. This procedure has a 5-10 year duration depending on the patient. [ menu ]

  • Neck Lift
About the procedure: Most often performed on patients over age 40, the neck lift procedure helps to improve loose and sagging skin of the neck by removing excess fat, tightening muscles and redraping the skin. The procedure takes several hours and utilizes local or general anesthesia in an outpatient or inpatient setting. A short inpatient stay may be recommended.

    Following the procedure:
Patients can experience temporary bruising, swelling, numbness and tenderness in the skin on the affected area. A tight feeling or dry skin may also be experienced. A 10-14 day recovery period can be expected. This procedure has a 5-10 year duration depending on the patient. [ menu ]

  • Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)
    About the procedure:
Blepharoplasty helps with drooping upper eyelids and puffy bags below the eyes. The procedure entails removing excess fat, skin and muscle and can take from 1-3 hours. This is usually an outpatient procedure that generally requires local anesthesia with sedation. Some cases may require general anesthesia, depending on the patient.

    Following the procedure:
Side effects of blepharoplasty includes temporary discomfort, tightness of lids as well as swelling and bruising. Eyes may experience dryness, burning or itching and sensitivity to light in the first few weeks. Risks of this procedure, such as possible impact to vision and area surrounding the eyes should be discussed with your surgeon. [ menu ]

  • Laser Hair Removal ( For Women , For Men )

    For Women

As a woman, you may be surprised to learn that just about your entire body is covered with hair. Because most of this hair is fine and pale, it usually isn't visible to the naked eye. In fact, you may be surprised to know that the largest number of hair follicles is actually on your forehead.

But when darker, coarser hair appears in places we don't like or expect - like on the face, neck, abdomen, breasts, or arms - or prevents us from wearing a high-cut bathing suit, shorts, or even a short skirt, it may be time to consider hair removal with the LightSheer Diode Laser available at the Cosmetic and Laser Surgery Institute.

About the procedure: In the past, the usual remedies for unwanted hair were plucking, shaving, waxing, or chemical depilatories. Some are painful, some are messy, and all are temporary. For long-term hair removal, electrolysis is popular and effective but can be painful and slow. Hair by hair, an electric current passes through a needle to destroy the hair root's ability to grow. It typically takes months or even years of regular visits - even for small areas, like the upper lip. Risks include electrical shock, infection, and pitting or scarring.

Now there's a more effective solution, the new LightSheer Diode Laser, a state-of-the-art system specially designed to remove unwanted hair faster, less painfully, and more reliably than electrolysis.

Understanding laser treatment: A laser produces a beam of highly concentrated light. Different types of lasers produce different colors of light. The color of light produced by a particular laser is the key to its effect on hair follicles. The light emitted by the LightSheer Diode Laser is absorbed by the pigment located in hair follicles. The laser pulses for a fraction of a second, just long enough to vaporize the pigment, disabling several follicles at a time to eliminate or significantly impede the hair's regrowth. Importantly, LightSheer's special contact-cooling hand-piece is perfect for a woman's sensitive skin. It directs the laser energy to the hair root while protecting and cooling the surrounding skin.

What you can expect: The length of a laser session may be a few minutes to an hour or more, depending on the size of the area being treated. Because the laser tends to treat hair follicles that are in an active growth phase, more than one treatment may be required to disable hair follicles that subsequently enter this growth phase. Laser treatment itself may cause a slight tingling sensation. Most patients tolerate the procedure well. But because some areas of the body are more sensitive than others, topical anesthesia is always available.

Following the procedure: The appearance of the treated area immediately after a laser session will vary from patient to patient depending on the extent of treatment and skin type. Immediate after-effects, if any, are minor. They may include redness and swelling, which disappear in a short time. Most people return to normal activity right away. We will be happy to tell you more about your treatment and what you can expect during your consultation. Depending on your needs, most body areas can be treated with this state-of-the-art technology. Ask us about the LightSheer Diode Laser and how we can use it to remove unwanted hair. [ menu ]

    For Men
Shaving or trimming your beard and mustache are regular grooming tasks you're used to. But what you may not like is that bothersome excess hair on your back or shoulders, around the ears, or between the eyebrows that seems to grow back faster than you can pluck or shave it. Or perhaps you're a competitive athlete for whom regular shaving of body hair is a tedious chore. Now may be the time to consider hair removal with the LightSheer Diode Laser.

    About the procedure
In the past, the usual remedies for unwanted hair were plucking, shaving, waxing, or chemical depilatories. Some are painful, some are messy, and all are only temporary.
For long-term hair removal, electrolysis is popular and effective but can be painful and slow. Hair by hair, an electric current passes through a needle to destroy the hair root's ability to grow. It typically takes months or even years of regular repeat treatments-even for small areas, like between your eyebrows. Risks include electrical shock, infection, and pitting or scarring.

Now there's a more effective solution, the new LightSheer Diode Laser, a state-of-the-art system specially designed to remove unwanted hair faster, less painfully, and more reliably than electrolysis.

The laser pulses for a fraction of a second, just long enough to vaporize the pigment, disabling several follicles at a time to eliminate or significantly impede the hair's regrowth. Importantly, LightSheer's special contact-cooling handpiece cools and protects the surrounding skin while bringing the laser energy as close as possible to the hair root.

    What you can expect
The length of a laser session may be a few minutes to an hour or more, depending on the size of the area being treated. Because the laser tends to treat hair follicles that are in an active growth phase, more than one treatment may be required to disable hair follicles that subsequently enter this growth phase. However, one treatment may result in a significant enough improvement that it may be all you desire or require.
The laser treatment itself can cause a slight tingling sensation. Most patients tolerate the procedure well. But because some areas of the body are more sensitive than others, topical anesthesia is always available.

    Following the procedure
The appearance of the treated area immediately after a laser session will vary from patient to patient depending on the extent of treatment. Immediate after-effects, if any, are minor. • Laser Treatment of Spider Veins
Laser treatment of spider veins (telangiectasia) of both face and lower extremities is now available at the Cosmetic & Laser Surgery Institute. Using the Versapulse Aesthetic Laser we are able to clear spider veins with minimal to no unpleasant side effects.

    About the procedure
Until now, laser treatment of blood vessels caused the vessels to rupture and left dark bruising under the skin, which lasted several weeks. The Versapulse laser delivers energy more slowly than the quick blast of earlier lasers. Because the vessels are treated over a longer period of time, they stay intact during treatment.
The Versapulse laser treatment is made more comfortable by the use of a chill tip, which comes in contact with the skin over the blood vessel, cooling it to 4 degrees centigrade before, during, and after treatment. This serves to protect the skin from injury, as well as reduce discomfort. Side effects of treatment are few, but may include redness, swelling, or pain at the treatment sight for a few days. Rarely seen is blistering or temporary skin pigment change on darker skinned individuals.

The Versapulse laser works by transmitting laser light through the skin to the blood within the blood vessels being treated. As the light is absorbed, it is converted to heat, which is conducted to the surrounding walls of the vessels. If enough damage is done to the walls of these tiny veins, the circulatory system will not be able to repair it, and there will be complete disappearance. This occurs in only one treatment in 80% of cases. If vessels are still visible after 4 to 6 weeks, one or two more treatments may be necessary.

Good candidates for treatment with the Versapulse Laser have light skin, which has not been exposed to the sun in recent months. Dark or tanned skin will absorb some of the laser light resulting in damage to the skin. Only small spider veins are effectively treated. Laser treatment is cosmetic, and does not treat vascular disease. Patients with large, bulging or varicosed veins, or those with venous insufficiency, are not effectively treated by this method. • Laser Face Lift
About the procedure: We are now able to remove surface imperfections and dramatically reduce lines and wrinkles with a new procedure called laser skin resurfacing or laser facelift. Using the UltraPulse® 5000C laser, we can gently remove sun-damaged, aging skin, layer-by-layer.The UltraPulse laser uses a very high energy beam of light to vaporize scarred, lined, wrinkled, and otherwise imperfect skin.

Laser light penetrates to a very precise, controlled depth, making the procedure safe and predictable, and reducing the risk of scarring or pigmentation problems. Laser skin resurfacing is bloodless, and is performed right here in our office, without the costs and risks of hospitalization or anesthesia.

Because the laser is gentle, comfort both during and after the procedure is improved, and helps provide you with a more rapid return to your normal routine. Skin resurfacing with the UltraPulse laser is rapid and gentle. Because the treatment is bloodless and does not involve chemicals that cover the surface of the skin, we are able to clearly see exactly how much tissue to treat and remove during the procedure.

Following the procedure: In the first few days after the procedure, your skin will weep as it repairs itself. It will then go through a period of crusting for a few days. When the crusting is gone, the fresh new skin will have a pink quality, which will fade over a period of approximately 2-6 weeks. This pinkness is easily camouflaged by makeup, which can usually be applied in 4-7 days, depending upon your skin’s response to treatment. Post-procedure discomfort is usually minor, requiring little or no medication. However, because pain tolerance is highly individual, we will make sure that you are kept comfortable during and after your resurfacing procedure.

We invite you to inquire about UltraPulse skin resurfacing, and how it can help you achieve smoother, fresher, younger-looking skin. [ menu ]

  • Microdermabrasion & Skin Care
Microdermabrasion is exfoliation of the skin through the use of minute crystals that are sprayed with a precise amount of force over the surface of the skin. The crystals are then vacuumed off along with the accumulation of dead skin cells resulting in the disappearance of an otherwise dull or sallow look Results from microdermabrasion are cumulative, and improvement increases with the number of treatments.

Microdermabrasion treatments result in rejuvenation of aged skin and improvement in the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, scars, and stretch marks. After a treatment, you can expect your skin to have a pink glow that usually last from 30 minutes to 6 hours.

The treatment is safe on any skin color or type and involves spraying out and vacuuming up micro-crystals through a hand piece held at a precise angle to the skin. This results in a gentle to more aggressive abrasion of the top layers of skin, depending on the desired result or goal. Treatments usually last approximately 10-30 minutes and can be done on any part of the body.

Follow-up treatments: Additional treatments are recommended from one to four weeks, again depending on the goal. The number of treatments for maximum results is two to twelve. Many people like to have maintenance microdermabrasion treatments each season to keep skin healthy and glowing. [ menu ]

Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery for the Face
  • Skin Cancer Surgery
If you are concerned about an area on your skin possibly being cancerous, it is good practice to discuss this with your family physician and/or dermatologist. If surgery is required to remove the surgery, the plastic surgeon is a good choice because of this specialist’s surgical background and natural propensity to practice scarring reduction techniques. Although other physicians can perform surgery for skin cancer – a plastic surgeon is helpful with reconstruction of the surgery site.

The most common type of skin cancer is basal cell carcinoma. This cancer grows slowly and spreads beyond its original site, however is not generally life-threatening unless left untreated. Squamous cell carcinoma is less common than basal cell and is most commonly found on the lips, face or ears. Again, if untreated it can be life threatening. The most dangerous melanoma that is spreading more in southern states is malignant melanoma. If discovered early enough it is curable – however if not it can spread throughout the body and if often deadly.

Basal and squamous cell carcinomas can vary widely in appearance. Cancer can take on many shapes, sizes and colors. It could begin as a small white or pink nodule or bump – it can be smooth and shiny, waxy or pitted on the surface. Or it could appear as a red spot that’s rough, dry or scaly.

The “ABCD” acronym is important to remember when considering whether an area on your skin is suspect.
    Look for:

Assymetry – or when the two halves of the area do not match.
Border irregularity – the area has ragged or blurry edges.
Color – a mixed appearance with tan, brown, black, even red, white or blue
Diameter – a growth more than the size of a pencil eraser, or a growth that has unusually increased in size could be suspect.

Remember, talk to your family physician first to diagnose the area and/or develop a treatment plan if you think an area may be cancerous. [ menu ]

  • Pediatric Plastic Surgery (Correction of prominent ears and birth defects of the face & hands)

  • Scar Reduction Surgery
    About the procedure:
Scar reduction or revision surgery is helpful for individuals who have scars that appear large or unattractive and do not become less noticeable over time. If a scar is a concern, a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon can help to determine the possible methods of treating your scar, the risks and benefits involved and the possible outcomes. It is important to be honest with your physician as well as have realistic expectations.

With any scar revision, it is important to know that no scar can be removed completely. The amount of improvement depends on a number of factors including the size and direction of your scar, the nature and quality of your skin and how well you care for the surgery site following the operation. It’s also important to be patient – the final results of the surgery may not be apparent for a year or more.

Following the procedure: While this like other plastic surgery procedures are generally safe, there is always the possibility of complications such as infection, bleeding, reactions to anesthesia or the recurrence of the scar. By following your physician’s advice before and following surgery, you can help to minimize risks and complications. [ menu ]

Cosmetic Surgery for the Body
  • Breast Augmentation
About the procedure: Breast augmentation or breast enlargement helps to enhance the size of breasts using inflatable implants filled with saline. The outpatient procedure usually takes 1-2 hours and requires local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. Side effects include temporary soreness, swelling, change in nipple sensation, bruising and sensitivity of the breast area for a few weeks.

The incision for each implant is made as inconspicuously as possible at one of three typical sites: under the arm, around the nipple, or within the breast fold. The breast implant is then placed either partially under the pectoralis major muscle (submuscular), or on top of the muscle and under the glands (subglandular). To assist in making the smallest possible incision, the implant is typically inserted empty and then filled with saline. In each of these areas that present options, your plastic surgeon will discuss what is the right option for you.

Breast implants vary in shape as well as size. Women can choose between a more rounded appearance or a shaped implant designed to reflect the slope of the breast.

Following the procedure: Patients with breast augmentation can usually return to work in a few days, however should keep from physical contact with the breasts from 3-4 weeks. The scars resulting from the procedure generally fade within several months to a year.

Undergoing any invasive surgical procedure may involve the risk of complications such as the effects of anesthesia, infection, swelling, bleeding, pain and delayed healing. In addition, there are potential complications specific to breast implants that can include deflation, interference with mammography, contraction of the scar tissue capsule around the implant, replacement or revision surgeries, calcium deposits in the tissue capsule, changes in nipple and breast sensation, shifting of the implant. Please discuss these possible complications with your surgeon. [ menu ]

  • Breast Lift
    About the procedure:
A breast lift is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts by removing excess skin and repositioning remaining tissue and nipples. The procedure generally takes between  1-3 hours to complete and requires local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia.

This surgery is usually performed in an outpatient surgery center, however depending on the patient, the procedure may be performed in a hospital and require an overnight stay. The duration of the results of the lifted breasts varies. Factors such as gravity, pregnancy, aging and weight changes may cause new sagging. Results may last longer or be enhanced when breast implants are inserted during the procedure.

Following the procedure: Side effects include temporary bruising, swelling, discomfort, numbness and dry breast skin – as well as permanent scars. Specific risks involved with this procedure should be discussed with your plastic surgeon. They can include thick, wide scars, infection, unevenly positioned nipples and permanent loss of feeling in nipples or breast.

Most patients can resume normal activities in one week or more, and more strenuous activities in one month. Scars can take several months to a year to fade. [ menu ]

  • Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)
About the procedure: Abdominoplasty or tummy tucks help to flatten the abdomen by removing excess fat and skin, while also tightening the muscles of the abdominal wall. Your plastic surgeon will discuss the incision site with you – to ensure that scarring is minimal and able to be hidden by your undergarments or swim wear.

The procedure can take between 2 and 5 hours and generally requires general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. Abdominoplasty may be performed on an inpatient or outpatient basis depending on individual patient situations and the extent of the surgery.

Following the procedure: Abdominoplasty can have side effects including temporary pain, swelling, numbness of surgery area, bruising or tiredness for several weeks or months. Specific risks of this procedure such as blood clots, infection, scarring or need for a second operation, should be discussed with your plastic surgeon. [ menu ]

  • Liposuction
    About the procedure:
Liposuction helps to improve body shape by removing fat deposits that are resistant to exercise with a tube and vacuum device. Common locations for liposuction include chin, cheeks, next, upper arms, above the breasts, abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, knees, calves and ankles. The procedure generally takes about 1-3 hours or more – depending on area and amount of fat deposit sites to treat.  Anesthesia required depends on the patient an varies from local to epidural or general. This is generally and outpatient procedure, however more complex procedures may require a short inpatient stay at an area hospital.

Following the procedure: Side effects can include temporary bruising, swelling or numbness. Risks of liposuction such as asymmetry, rippling or bagginess of skin, pigmentation change, skin injury or fluid retention or loss should be discussed with your plastic surgeon. [ menu ]

Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery for the Body
  • Breast Reduction
    About the procedure:
Breast reduction, technically known as reduction mammaplasty, is designed for women with very large breasts who may experience a variety of medical problems caused by the excessive weight. These problems range from back and neck pain and skin irritation to skeletal deformities and breathing problems – not to forget the psychological consequences such as reduced self esteem. Breast reduction removes fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the breasts, making them smaller, lighter, and firmer. It can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. The goal is to give the woman smaller, better-shaped breasts in proportion with the rest of her body.

In most cases, breast reduction isn't performed until a woman's breasts are fully developed; however, it can be done earlier if large breasts are causing serious physical discomfort. The best candidates are those who are mature enough to fully understand the procedure and have realistic expectations about the results. Breast reduction is not recommended for women who intend to breast-feed.

As with any surgery, there is always possibility of complications with breast reduction, including bleeding, infection, or reaction to the anesthesia. Some patients develop small sores around their nipples after surgery; these can be treated with antibiotic creams. You can reduce your risks by closely following your physician's advice both before and after surgery.

In your initial consultation, discuss your expectations frankly with your surgeon, and listen to his or her opinion. Every patient and every physician has a different view of what is a desirable size and shape for breasts.

Following the procedure: The procedure does leave noticeable, permanent scars, although they'll be covered by your bra or bathing suit. (Poor healing and wider scars are more common in smokers.) The procedure can also leave you with slightly mismatched breasts or unevenly positioned nipples. Future breast-feeding may not be possible, since the surgery removes many of the milk ducts leading to the nipples. Some patients may experience a permanent loss of feeling in their nipples or breasts. [ menu ]

  • Breast Reconstruction
About the procedure: If you are facing the loss of a breast due to cancer or other disease, breast reconstruction may be an option for you. Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure to recreate the contour of your breast using either a prosthesis or your own tissues. Though great strides have been made in breast reconstruction, resulting in more aesthetic breast shape and appearance, it is important for you to realize that the reconstructed breast will not look or feel exactly like your natural breast.

The procedure can begin immediately – at the time of your mastectomy, or delayed by weeks to years afterwards. The type of breast reconstruction available depends on your medical situation, your breast shape and size, your general health and lifestyle, and your goals.

Other surgical procedures related to breast reconstruction include reconstruction of the nipple and areola area and/or breast lift, breast reduction, or breast enlargement to the remaining breast. These procedures are usually done as a separate outpatient procedure following completion of the initial reconstructive surgery.

Following the procedure: Please discuss possible side effects of this procedure with your plastic surgeon. Patients with breast reconstruction can usually return to work in a few days, however should keep from physical contact with the breasts from 3-4 weeks.

[ menu ]
